PROJECT OVERVIEW
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Architecture & Interior Design: Homeroom Studio

The design of Whispering Dunes is deeply influenced by its natural surroundings. Positioned near a park and surrounded by mature trees, the home was designed to evoke a sense of calm and connection with nature. The original, segmented layout was transformed into an open-plan living space to better suit the family’s lifestyle and love for entertaining. Additional glazing at the rear of the home enhances the visual dialogue between the indoor and outdoor environments, allowing natural light to flood the interior and create a seamless connection with the lush greenery outside.
Material selection was crucial in achieving the desired aesthetic and functionality. The design features a palette of neutral tones complemented by stone selections with prominent veining, which add depth and movement to the space. Timber veneer joinery, linen window furnishings, and European oak flooring contribute to a warm, textured atmosphere. Made by Storey’s Ground flooring, crafted from select-grade European oak, was chosen for its warm caramel tones, providing the perfect foundation for the home’s design. “The caramel-toned oak board created an ideal base for our selections,” says Dankner. The flooring’s knot-free finish and natural look contribute to the refined, seamless feel of the space.
Sustainability was a key consideration, with the flooring being responsibly sourced and manufactured using eco-friendly practices. The Made by Storey flooring is formaldehyde-free and accredited by Sensitive Choice, ensuring a healthy option for family living.
The interior of Whispering Dunes is enhanced by carefully curated furniture and artwork that complements the home’s warm tones and textures. “We used rich jewel-toned upholstery, layered textures, and bespoke objects to inject character and color into the space,” notes Dankner. These elements work harmoniously with the architectural details, contributing to the overall sense of tranquility and cohesion.
The selection of furniture and art was aimed at creating a cohesive look that reflects both the home’s heritage and modern sensibilities. Rich upholstery and bespoke objects provide the finishing touches, adding a layer of sophistication and personal style to the residence.
One of the challenges faced during the project was dealing with the property’s heritage nature. The original flooring, having worn out over time, was no longer suitable. Homeroom Studio worked closely with Made by Storey to select flooring that provided both character and alignment with the home’s historical context. This careful consideration ensured that every detail, from the choice of materials to the design execution, was handled with respect for the home’s history while incorporating modern elements.
Whispering Dunes by Homeroom Studio stands as a prime example of how thoughtful design and material selection can breathe new life into a heritage home. By balancing traditional and contemporary elements, the project has created a functional and enduring space that offers a serene retreat for its residents. This Melbourne residence is a beautiful blend of old and new, where every detail has been considered to achieve a refined and tranquil living environment.
