Architect Lee F. Mindel has creatively expanded his Veritas collection during his time as an artist-in-residence at the RALPH PUCCI sculpture studio in New York City. Introducing six new pieces, the collection showcases the potential of PUCCI’s unique Plasterglass material through compelling forms inspired by global destinations and artisanal craftsmanship. Meaning “truth and honor” in Latin, Veritas celebrates the stories and artistry involved in crafting each piece, highlighting a vision of effortless design despite the material’s challenges.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Architect: Lee F. Mindel
Brand: RALPH PUCCI
Material: Plasterglass
Collection: Veritas
Location: New York City

Incorporating sophistication and elegance, the collection’s centerpiece includes the Pont Royal Sofa, which draws inspiration from Parisian beauty and refinement. This elegant seating option aims to be both inviting and harmonious, complementing other room elements seamlessly. Another standout piece, the Santorini Coffee Table, evokes imagery of serene waterways and gracefully arched bridges. Its combination with light blue tones in the walls and rug freshens the room, achieving a clean and polished aesthetic that cleverly disguises the handmade nature of each item.

Emphasizing a unified design language, the Rialto Bench shares its structural form with the Santorini Coffee Table, both leveraging the same sculptural molds to achieve their distinct arched look. The Santorini Console exemplifies the casting prowess of the collection, pushing the limits of the Plasterglass material while capitalizing on the expertise of the artisans. Mindel explains how these innovative forms emerged from a process free of literal representation, resulting in fresh interpretations grounded in originality and creativity.

The Veritas collection also introduces the Circle Game Chandelier, which takes inspiration from the circular motifs of the Double Take Mirrors. Together, these hand-built pieces spark a conversation between contemporary design and the perception of traditional craftsmanship. Mindel emphasizes the collaborative essence of the collection, acknowledging how working with master craftsmen was instrumental in pushing their creative boundaries and reimagining what is possible within the realm of design.

A key consideration during the development of the collection was a consciousness regarding material waste and economy. Mindel notes the challenge of achieving designs that appear inevitable and effortless, often requiring more effort to perfect. This mindfulness is counterbalanced by a desire to innovate, crafting pieces that look as though they were meant to be. The resulting collection reflects Mindel’s architectural philosophy, which seeks to transcend the ordinary in pursuit of the extraordinary.

The Veritas collection pays homage to Mindel’s background and dedication to his craft. The term ‘Veritas,’ with its roots in Harvard’s motto, symbolizes the rigorous and honest approach Mindel applies to architecture and design. His collaboration with RALPH PUCCI’s Master Sculptor enhanced his understanding of Plasterglass, revealing its moldability and transformative capabilities. With a commitment to surpassing common design paradigms, Mindel crafts pieces that elevate practical function into the realm of high art.
