PROJECT OVERVIEW

Interior Designer: Robert Stilin
Gallerist: Sarah Gavlak
Location: Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, West Palm Beach, Florida
Architect: Marion Sims Wyeth
Historical Significance: Home of Norton Museum of Art Founders

The Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens, nestled in West Palm Beach’s historic El Cid district, hold a rich legacy dating back to 1925. Originally the residence of Ralph and Elizabeth Norton, who founded the Norton Museum of Art, the property exemplifies architectural elegance. Designed in the then-popular Monterey Revival style by Marion Sims Wyeth—who also designed Mar-a-Lago—the house became a sanctuary of art. After Elizabeth’s passing, Ralph married Ann Weaver, a sculptor whose works continue to grace the estate. Visitors today are invited to experience this heritage through visits to Ann’s sculptures, her studio, and the lush gardens encompassing the property.

In their reimagining of the Norton home, Stilin and Gavlak have skillfully woven the tapestry of past and present into a visually striking narrative. The interiors are a canvas where Gavlak’s contemporary art selections harmoniously coexist with Stilin’s curated collection of modern furniture, decor, and lighting. The resulting ambience pays homage to the historical context, while infusing it with fresh, vibrant energy that reflects both creators’ unique aesthetics. Through their meticulous curation, the house is transformed, adding layers of history and personality to the already storied space.

Stilin’s expertise in interior design is evident in every piece he has selected for the exhibition. Known for his ability to blend classic styles with modern elements, Stilin sources furniture and decor from his personal favorite galleries and his shop, introducing patrons to an eclectic yet cohesive visual experience. His selections complement Gavlak’s keen eye for contemporary art, creating dialogue within each room of the house that speaks to innovation while honoring tradition. This combination not only enhances the individual allure of each piece but elevates the home into an immersive art form in itself.

Sarah Gavlak, known for her pioneering efforts in contemporary art, has infused the Norton home with artworks that provoke thought and evoke emotion. Her choices add depth and dimension, transforming each space into an engaging gallery experience. By juxtaposing cutting-edge art with the home’s historic architecture, Gavlak fosters a sense of continuity and change, sparking conversations that transcend time. The symbiotic relationship between the art and Stilin’s design elements underscores her nuanced understanding of artistic expression and spatial dynamics.

Together, Stilin and Gavlak have curated an exhibition that is not just a feast for the eyes but also a meditation on the timeless dialogue between art and design. This endeavor celebrates the power of collaboration, revealing new interpretations of the historical and the contemporary. As visitors explore the transformed Norton home, they are invited to experience artistry in an intimate setting, where each piece is thoughtfully placed to resonate with the surroundings and the viewer. Through this harmonious collaboration, the Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens continue to serve as a beacon of cultural enrichment and inspiration.
