Hopper Joint, designed by Brahman Perera in collaboration with restaurateur Jason M. Jones, is a heartfelt celebration of memory, heritage, and community. Once a dated piano bar, the space has been completely transformed into an enchanting eatery inspired by Perera’s Sri Lankan roots, reflecting both his personal history and his unique approach to design.

The eight-year renovation process has culminated in an inviting and thoughtful space that weaves together local craftsmanship, timeless design elements, and the vibrant energy of South Asia. By reimagining the tropical modernist style made famous by Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, Hopper Joint showcases Perera’s commitment to honoring his heritage while crafting a contemporary dining experience.

The attention to detail is evident in every corner of the restaurant. Custom-designed rattan chairs, hand-blown amber glassware, and plaster hand lights by Sydney-based artist Max Rixon lend an intimate, handmade touch to the interiors. Even the embroidered marigold serviettes, sourced from Sri Lanka, evoke a sense of home and warmth, inviting guests to feel part of the family.

Central to the dining experience at Hopper Joint is the open kitchen, where diners can witness the meticulous process of making hoppers, a traditional Sri Lankan street food. This aspect of the restaurant design not only celebrates the artistry of food preparation but also encourages a communal spirit, drawing people into the experience with its sensory appeal. There’s even a designated handwashing station, subtly encouraging guests to engage in the Sri Lankan custom of eating with their hands.

Anchored by Perera’s family history, the restaurant embraces both traditional and modern design elements. The red cork floor and teak timber shutters nod to Asian influences, while rattan fans and antique crystal chandeliers echo the charm of Colombo and the architecture of southern Sri Lanka. Vintage and repurposed furniture, such as the striking drum pendants above the bar, adds a sense of history and character to the space.

Yet, despite its deeply personal foundation, Hopper Joint fits seamlessly into Melbourne’s eclectic dining scene. The restaurant reflects the city’s diversity and energy, offering a uniquely Melbourne experience while simultaneously serving as a tribute to the Sri Lankan diaspora.
