Tucked away near the timeless Les Invalides in Paris, France, the Garibaldi project by Studio IDA exemplifies how thoughtful renovation can harmoniously fuse historic character with modern living. This imaginative overhaul of a triangular stable, once a modest equine haven, has transformed it into a chic short-term rental. Reflecting a balance of minimalism and sophistication, the renovation highlights how retaining echoes of the past can enhance contemporary design.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Architect: Studio IDA
Location: Paris, France
Project: Garibaldi Renovation

Originally serving as a stable and later as residential quarters, the facility had seen better days and called for a comprehensive renovation. Encompassing only 172 square feet, the space lacked a mezzanine, contributing to a restricted feel, and battled issues such as humidity that weakened its structure. Intriguingly, during the renovation process, horse irons were unearthed, providing tangible ties to the structure’s equestrian roots. These details both challenged and inspired the design team to craft a space respectful of its heritage while rejuvenating it for present-day needs.

The design approach concentrated on optimizing functionality and comfort while preserving historical allure. The absence of a previously used attic provided an opportunity to repurpose it into a mezzanine, exploiting the impressive heights of the space, which soar to nearly 20 feet at the back. This strategic enhancement introduces distinct zones within the compact area, enhancing its utility by creating a dedicated sleeping zone that makes it feel significantly larger than it actually is.

In harmony with the intended fluidity and warmth of the home, the use of curves features prominently, refining the space’s edges and fostering an inviting, organic flow between areas. Each design decision aligns with a minimalist sensibility, seamlessly integrating classic and contemporary elements. The ground floor, acting as the hub, supports a multitude of functions. At its center is a curved kitchen island, aesthetically pleasing yet designed with practicality in mind, housing essential utilities like a sink, washing machine, and dishwasher. A bespoke bench flanks the island, tracing the walls’ curves to provide versatile seating options for dining, relaxing, or working.

The kitchen’s design cleverly maximizes space beneath the staircase leading to the mezzanine, ensuring a fully equipped area without compromising the minimalist aesthetic. A large storage unit blends into the backdrop of the room, cleverly hiding electrical components and accommodating kitchen necessities within easy reach, thereby maintaining elegance and simplicity. The bathroom, characterized by precise symmetry and minimalist artful touches, features a sliding door veiling a striking vanity. Twin symmetrical arches highlight key components: one leads to a shower, the other frames the toilet, enhancing functionality and aesthetics.

The mezzanine, providing an intimate sleeping area, prioritizes comfort without sacrificing functional design. The bed is strategically elevated to adjust to the roof’s structural specifics, with ample storage creatively built underneath, further optimizing space usage. Subtle design choices, such as mirrored moldings, create an illusion of depth, while luxurious touches like a small green marble shelf introduce a hint of opulence. The continuity of a woven carpet, extending from the floor onto the stairs leading to this cozy enclave, along with the incorporation of small windows, infuses the space with light and frames unique perspectives of the home, connecting the floors visually and spatially.

Studio IDA’s Garibaldi project successfully feeds modern needs without erasing the echoes of its storied past. Through meticulous design and an appreciation for the building’s history, the team transformed a historical structure into a pristine representation of how architecture can evolve while retaining intrinsic qualities. This innovative renovation respects its origins while looking steadfastly to the future, ensuring that the small space is as functional and inviting as it is steeped in history.
