In the heart of London’s prestigious Mayfair neighborhood, dMFK Architects has transformed a 6,500-square-foot commercial space into an inviting headquarters for an investment firm, straying far from the traditional, austere office aesthetic. Set within a heritage building, the design embraces warmth and community while maintaining the quality of a base-build renovation that had somewhat diluted the historic character. The project goal was to balance autonomous workspaces with areas that encourage staff interaction and collaboration.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Architect: dMFK Architects
Location: Mayfair, London
Project Size: 6,500 square feet
Design Focus: Warmth and Community
Materials: Rich woods, natural stone, ceramic slabs
To achieve this, the original split-level area now features subdivided spaces including smaller offices, working pods, and intimate meeting rooms. These flow seamlessly into larger open-plan sections, crafting a circuit of connectivity that accommodates diverse work styles for a 50-member team. Whether for brainstorming sessions in small groups or seeking solitude in quieter spots, employees have varied options that respond flexibly to their needs. The layout promotes a sense of togetherness while respecting the need for privacy where necessary.

The interior design draws heavily on rich materials that layer depth while staying true to existing elements. This deliberate choice to mix finishes and textures mimics a home-like ambiance, contrasting sharply with the clinical efficiency typical of many modern offices. Light and dark stained woods are harmoniously paired with natural stone and ceramic slabs, enhancing the heritage vibe. Ash flooring alongside oak joinery introduces subtle variation, and the neutral color palette blends effortlessly with the client’s curated artwork collection.

Artwork, including vibrant sculptures and paintings, injects lively pops of color throughout the office, creating dynamic visual surprises as one travels between floors. These pieces not only complement the understated palette but also add emotional and thought-provoking dimensions to the office environment. This carefully curated collection serves as a grounding element that binds the aesthetic appeal of the space with intellectual and cultural enrichment.

Furniture in the office has been meticulously selected or custom designed to enhance the space’s lived-in, welcoming feel. Rooms of varying sizes are equipped with furniture that fits both the spatial and aesthetic requirements, including a bespoke dining table that stands as the central hub for communal activities. A sophisticated twist on the conventional sit-stand desk adds another layer of elegance, crafted in wood to seamlessly integrate into the elevated surroundings.

dMFK Architects have envisioned the headquarters to evolve alongside the needs of its staff, ensuring that the space grows in character and functionality over time. This concept of longevity underscores an authenticity and tactility designed to improve with age, akin to the development of a patina. The thoughtful integration of natural materials, varied textures, and bespoke furniture creates an environment that is not only functional but one that speaks to the soul, promising lasting relevance and adaptability for the future.
