[Introduction]
Ceramist Alex Matisse, a descendant of artistic legend Henri Matisse, has carved out his own niche in the world of pottery, balancing a rich family heritage with personal ambition. Born and raised in New England, Matisse discovered his passion for clay early on, despite initial efforts to evade the weight of his family’s legacy. His journey from a traditional arts education to founding the renowned East Fork pottery business is a testament to his dedication to craftsmanship and artistry.

[Family and Artistic Heritage]
Alex Matisse grew up surrounded by the echoes of artistic genius, with his great-grandfather Henri Matisse and his father, Paul Matisse, both leaving indelible marks on the art world. Although art seemed like an inevitable path, Alex was initially hesitant to pursue it. He wanted to avoid being overshadowed by comparisons to his distinguished relatives. It wasn’t until college, where he intentionally avoided art classes, that he realized the absence of clay in his life left him profoundly unhappy. He soon immersed himself in a ceramics program, only to leave a year and a half later for a more hands-on education through traditional apprenticeships with master potters Matt Jones and Mark Hewitt.

[Founding East Fork]
In 2009, channeling his passion into entrepreneurship, Matisse purchased an old tobacco farm in North Carolina’s mountains and established East Fork Pottery. He constructed a 36-foot-long wood-burning kiln and set up workshops on the farm, setting the foundation for what would become a thriving business. Today, East Fork stands as one of the largest dinnerware manufacturers in the United States, a success he shares with his wife, Connie Rose Coady-Matisse. Balancing work and personal life can be challenging, but Alex finds solace in cycling through the woods, allowing nature to refresh his creativity.

[Ritual and Reflection]
The creative process for Matisse is often spontaneous, with inspiration striking at unexpected moments, such as during his long commutes. Although he struggles with maintaining a physical notebook, preferring to jot down ideas in multiple half-filled ones, he places great value on capturing fleeting thoughts. Personal treasures, such as a meticulously crafted wooden ladle given by a friend, reflect his appreciation for detail and functionality in art. Despite his general philosophy that objects are meant to be used, this particular piece remains a cherished keepsake.

[Personal Spaces and Inspirations]
Matisse draws inspiration not only from his art but from the peaceful retreats he shares with his family. A rustic cabin in the woods, initially rented during the 2020 lockdown and later purchased, provides a haven for the Matisse family. This small, closet-less abode is nestled amid lush landscapes designed by Alex himself and offers a simple lifestyle that strengthens family bonds. The absence of modern clutter, combined with the presence of playful elements like a wood-fired hot tub, transforms it into a cherished sanctuary.

[Legacy and Vision]
Throughout his career, Alex has been deeply influenced by his father, Paul Matisse, whose approach to art blends invention and aesthetic beauty. Creating interactive musical sculptures, Paul Matisse imbued his work with joy, a quality Alex aspires to emulate. East Fork’s journey from rustic beginnings to a prominent commercial enterprise speaks to Alex Matisse’s ambition and ingenuity. Though a new chapter in Asheville has begun, he retains his passion for traditional pottery techniques. The dismantling of his first wood kiln marked the end of an era, yet Alex dreams of building another expansive kiln, perhaps on his native soil. His vision continues to meld tradition with innovation, honoring his lineage while paving a distinct path forward.
