In an exhilarating stride forward, Brooklyn-based lighting design studio Wooj embarks on its most ambitious venture yet, set to unfold throughout 2025. Following a remarkable period of growth since its inception in 2020, Wooj aims to redefine modern lighting design with the launch of monthly collections. This exciting initiative promises to more than double the studio’s product range, showcasing a remarkable blend of sustainability, avant-garde 3D printing, and innovative design in each unveiling. With the releases of January and February already setting a high standard, Wooj is paving the way for a year abundant with groundbreaking creations that are sure to captivate design enthusiasts.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Designer: Christopher Merchant, Walmen Dumaliang, Jason Wu Bergeron
Location: Brooklyn, New York
Studio: Wooj Lighting Design Studio

Kicking off the series, Wooj’s January collection draws inspiration from nature’s intricate textures and biomorphic forms rooted in previous designs. Highlighting this collection is the Coral Lamp, which celebrates the fascinating structure of brain coral alongside the unique patterns found in human fingerprints. The lamp exemplifies the studio’s commitment to innovation by employing artificial intelligence to generate its intricate surface, later reconstructed with precision in modeling software. The result is a tactile, sculptural piece that mirrors the intriguing beauty of coral formations, inviting users to appreciate its artful design.

The January launch also marks Wooj’s continued collaboration with designer Christopher Merchant, who presents the Baleine Lamp inspired by the sweeping grace of Baleen Whales. This design adeptly marries the concepts of transformation and fluidity, using layers of recycled plastic to create a dynamic form that feels both natural and modern. The interplay of these layers not only underscores the lamp’s aesthetic appeal but also champions the ecological potential of recycled materials in contemporary design practices.

Completing January’s offerings, the Echo Sconce takes cues from the popularity of Wooj’s previous Helios Sconce. This new iteration introduces a renter-friendly, plug-in version featuring a stunning concentric circle motif. It offers appealing flexibility with dimmable functionality, making it suitable for various settings. The meticulously arranged circles ensure optimal light diffusion, producing a gentle, ambient glow that enhances any space. This thoughtful redesign underscores Wooj’s ability to evolve and elevate their existing groundbreaking concepts.

In February, Wooj continues its exploration of form and material with designs that refine and revolutionize past concepts. Leading this lineup is the Mini Allium Lamp, a compact rendition of the acclaimed Allium Lamp, once again envisioned by Christopher Merchant. Despite its smaller size, this lamp maintains its larger counterpart’s dramatic visual impact, making it a perfect fit for intimate settings such as bedside tables and bookshelves. Its condensation of size without compromising aesthetic appeal exemplifies Wooj’s mastery in optimizing design for diverse living spaces.

Emerging from a partnership with Walmen Dumaliang, the Prima Lamp presents a striking exploration of geometry and light. When lit, its translucent finish emits a soft, ambient glow, accentuating its radially arranged, geometric layers. The seamless flow from shade to base positions the Prima Lamp as much a work of art as it is a light source. The interplay of light and shadow imbues the fixture with a poetic quality, reflecting Wooj’s dedication to creating pieces that serve as both functional and sculptural in nature.

Concluding the February collection, the Lotus Lamp by designer Jason Wu Bergeron introduces a versatile feature to Wooj’s offerings. Its innovative design allows the lamp’s shade to be positioned for upward or downward light projection, providing adaptable ambiance to suit various moods and spaces. This blend of flexibility and simplicity further cements Wooj’s reputation for delivering thoughtful, user-centric design solutions that enhance everyday living. As the studio unveils new designs with each passing month, Wooj’s evolving design language continues to blur the lines between organic inspiration and groundbreaking technology, signaling a thrilling year ahead in modern lighting.
