Nestled in the heart of Barcelona’s Eixample district, CURLYLAB is more than just a hair salon—it’s a celebration of architectural heritage and modern design. Completed in 2023 by the acclaimed interior design studio Miriam Barrio, this 65-square-meter space redefines the salon experience with its innovative use of organic forms and artisanal craftsmanship.

A Historical Canvas
CURLYLAB resides in a late 19th-century building that seamlessly blends Neo-Gothic and Catalan architectural styles. This historical backdrop provided a rich canvas for Miriam Barrio’s team to craft an interior that honors the building’s heritage while embracing contemporary aesthetics. The restoration of the Catalan vault ceiling, adorned with intricate floral motifs, not only enhances the space’s historical depth but also inspires the salon’s overall design.

Upon entering CURLYLAB, visitors are greeted by a striking warm terracotta facade that contrasts with the surrounding grey exteriors. Inside, a rich tapestry of textures unfolds—exposed brickwork, micro-cement surfaces, and glazed ceramic tiling mingle with luxurious velvet upholstery. This dynamic interplay of materials creates a tactile landscape that is both visually captivating and inviting. The curvaceous, free-standing counters and seating elements further enhance the space’s playfulness and elegance, guiding clients through the various workstations.

One of the standout features of CURLYLAB is its commitment to artisanal craftsmanship. Custom-made suspended light fittings, crafted in collaboration with a local blacksmith, highlight the salon’s beautifully restored ceilings and provide both ambient and task lighting. The black metal fixtures, along with oval-shaped mirrors and a ‘colour bar’ wall-mounted cabinet, underscore the space’s dedication to local artistry. Additionally, lamps by a local ceramist add a touch of handcrafted charm, reinforcing the salon’s welcoming and inspiring atmosphere.
A Symphony of Organic Forms
The design of CURLYLAB is characterized by its use of organic forms and nature-inspired textures. The salon’s free-standing furniture and seating elements feature curvaceous shapes that echo the salon’s focus on curly hair, adding a playful yet sophisticated touch to the space. The warm terracotta tones and rich textures, including velvet and ceramic, create a harmonious environment that feels both grounded and expansive. This thoughtful approach to design not only enhances the salon’s aesthetic appeal but also reflects its commitment to providing a bespoke and personalized experience.

Crafting a Unique Client Experience
CURLYLAB’s interior design is a testament to the seamless blend of historical reverence and modern innovation. The space offers more than just a place for hair care; it provides a visually stimulating and immersive experience that stands out in Barcelona’s vibrant Eixample district. Every detail, from the restoration of the Catalan vault ceiling to the artisanal lighting fixtures, contributes to an environment that embodies creativity and craftsmanship.

As Barcelona continues to evolve, CURLYLAB stands as a beacon of design excellence, where heritage and modernity coalesce to create an unforgettable salon experience. With its innovative use of organic forms, natural textures, and artisanal craftsmanship, CURLYLAB is not just a destination for hair care but a celebration of the art of design.
