In the heart of Washington, D.C., a vibrant couple embarked on a journey to downsize their living space without sacrificing their lifestyle. Their search led them to an art-filled penthouse nestled within the Ritz-Carlton Residences Georgetown along the Potomac River. This dynamic abode serves as a perfect blend of family-friendliness and artistic flair, housing an impressive collection that includes works by renowned artists like Fernando Botero and Robert Rauschenberg, all while providing ample space for visiting children and grandchildren.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Architect: John Meeks and Jim Aman
Location: Ritz-Carlton Residences Georgetown, Washington, D.C.
Art Collection: Fernando Botero, Francois-Xavier Lalanne, Robert Rauschenberg
Interior Design: Aman & Meeks
Design Style: Contemporary with Antique Furnishings

Designed by John Meeks and Jim Aman of Aman & Meeks, the penthouse reflects the couple’s desire for a seamless fusion of art, family life, and entertainment. Having transitioned from a larger house, the couple sought a more convenient lifestyle that did not compromise on the aesthetics or functionality they cherished. The design firm’s understanding of the couple’s preferences stemmed from a longstanding professional relationship, having designed their previous D.C. home and their residence in Palm Beach. The only directive here was a simple yet bold one: an “all white” interior.

The nearly 5,000-square-foot space features two bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms, carefully crafted to serve as a serene backdrop for the homeowners’ museum-worthy art collection. Venetian plaster coats the 10-foot ceilings and walls, executing the desired “white cube” effect that allows the art to stand out. Complementing the contemporary design are antique furnishings, many of which are heirlooms inherited from the homeowner’s mother, enriching the space with personal history and warmth.

The task of harmonizing various design periods, styles, and aesthetics with a formidable art collection was handed adeptly by Aman and Meeks. With nearly three decades of experience, they have mastered the art of balancing interior spaces with high-caliber pieces. Their strategic approach ensures that the furniture and decor enhance rather than overshadow the art. This understanding was clarified early in their careers when a client impressed upon them the importance of letting art take the limelight, a rule they continue to adhere to.

Situated with breathtaking views of the Potomac River, the penthouse reflects the couple’s worldliness and taste. Despite its sophisticated appearance, the space is designed with accessibility and comfort in mind for their family, emphasizing that elegance and usability can coexist. The emphasis on a welcoming environment is seen in the open space layout that allows grandchildren to explore freely without restriction, suggesting that practicality and high style need not be mutually exclusive.

Ultimately, this penthouse stands as a testament to the couple’s commitment to art, family, and community—a place where memories are made amid masterpieces. Traveling between homes, they ensure that their abode is not just a gallery but a home filled with life and laughter. Their story is an inspiring narrative that encapsulates the essence of creating a space that is a personal haven and a shared retreat for loved ones, where aesthetics and family values converge beautifully.
