In the heart of Manhattan’s iconic Greenwich Village, renowned designer Nate Berkus embarks on his first residential development project, The Katharine. This exquisite collection of eight residences, developed by Slate Property Group in collaboration with Avenue Realty Capital, brings together Berkus’s intimate understanding of the area and its lifestyle. Engaged by Compass broker Leonard Steinberg for his deep local ties, Berkus embraces the challenge of creating spaces that reflect the character and charm of the neighborhood he knows and loves.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
Architect: Benjamin Wistar Morris
Location: Greenwich Village, Manhattan
Designer: Nate Berkus
Development Partner: Slate Property Group
Architecture Firm: BKSK Architects
Broker: Leonard Steinberg
Originally built in 1930 as The Katharine House by the Ladies Christian Union, the structure’s conversion has been a careful preservation of its historical essence. Renowned architect Benjamin Wistar Morris, who was behind landmarks such as the Union League Club, initially crafted the building. With BKSK Architects, Berkus has managed to maintain its distinctive landmarked facade while introducing modern elements such as stone flooring, vintage Italian lighting, and large south-facing windows. Unexpected design touches, like custom marble fireplaces in select homes, add a layer of sophistication and surprise.

Nate Berkus’s personal experiences, particularly as a father, have profoundly influenced the project’s design philosophy, emphasizing practicality while maintaining aesthetic elegance. The internal layouts draw inspiration from pre-war architecture, focusing on creating spacious environments that ensure privacy. Thoughtful design solutions are evident everywhere, from family-friendly kitchen configurations to versatile rooms that can accommodate both guests and live-in assistance. These homes are not just about style but functionality, addressing everyday family needs like storage and organization.

The hands-on nature of this project allowed Nate Berkus Associates to leave a unique mark on every aspect—from cabinetry detailing to the choice of staff uniforms. Berkus envisioned homes that reflect the lifestyles of potential residents, creating spaces that are both luxurious and livable. The model unit, rather than being a typical staged space, was designed to embody the tastes of a cultured, art-loving couple. Vintage finds sourced from international auctions, like tables obtained in Belgium, add layers of character and narrative to the interiors.

Amenities in The Katharine enhance the residents’ experience with features such as a 24-hour attended lobby, a well-equipped fitness studio with a yoga terrace, and private storage units accompanying each apartment. These offerings align with the lifestyle needs of potential inhabitants, ensuring every comfort and convenience is taken into account.

Broker Leonard Steinberg praises the collaborative effort and shared appreciation for Greenwich Village’s unique context. The synergy between Berkus’s design vision, the architectural expertise of BKSK, and developers committed to historic preservation, forms a cohesive and respectful approach to this project. The Katharine represents more than just a residential development; it embodies a thoughtful integration of past and present, honoring the legacy of its neighborhood while catering to modern living demands.
