PROJECT OVERVIEW
Location: Kemang District / Jakarta, Indonesia
Architecture & Interior Design: RAD+ar
Photography: Mario Wibowo
RAD+ar, led by principal Antonius Richard, embarked on a transformative journey to redefine the use of space in Jakarta’s bustling commercial area. “Our core concept was to explore the potential of split-level design to create distinct zones within a limited footprint,” Richard explains. This approach not only maximizes the use of a compact site but also seamlessly integrates nature into the design.
The result is a harmonious blend of contemporary architecture and tropical elements, creating a multi-dimensional experience for patrons.
The centerpiece of the Aruma project is its sweeping concrete roof, a masterful feat of design that serves both form and function. The roof curves dramatically, creating a captivating ceiling for the ground-floor dining area. This innovative design feature also leads to a large, tropical terrace, merging indoor and outdoor spaces in an elegant flow.
The underside of this concrete roof is a sculptural element that enhances the restaurant’s ambiance, with its dramatic curves creating a sense of intimacy and grandeur. A carefully designed dividing wall separates the dining area from the kitchen and facilities, optimizing both functionality and aesthetics.
A long, narrow skylight at the intersection of the roof’s curved and sloping sections plays a pivotal role in bringing natural light into the space. This architectural detail ensures that the restaurant is bathed in daylight, enhancing the overall dining experience.
The lighting strips embedded between the stepped segments of the roof add a contemporary touch, highlighting the concrete’s texture and creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow throughout the day and night.
The spatial organization of Aruma is thoughtfully designed to create a fluid connection between different areas. A ramp leads visitors from the garden area to a mezzanine bar, which opens onto the expansive rooftop terrace. This multi-level layout not only provides varied spatial experiences but also ensures a cohesive design narrative.
The rooftop terrace steps upward, offering panoramic views of the city while incorporating seating areas and planters into its design. This integration of greenery into the rooftop spaces enhances the connection between the built environment and its natural surroundings.
Founded by Antonius Richard in 2017, RAD+ar is known for pushing the boundaries of architectural design. The studio’s previous project, Frame Garden, revitalized a neglected park in Jakarta with a large stepped garden framed by mirrored panels, demonstrating their commitment to blending contemporary design with natural elements.
Aruma restaurant and bar continues this tradition of innovative design, showcasing RAD+ar’s ability to transform urban spaces into engaging, nature-infused environments. The project’s success is a testament to the studio’s vision and expertise in creating spaces that resonate with both aesthetic appeal and functional elegance.
The stunning visuals of Aruma are captured by Mario Wibowo, whose photography highlights the interplay of concrete and greenery in the project. Wibowo’s images bring to life the architectural details and the serene ambiance of the restaurant, offering a visual narrative that complements the design’s innovative spirit.
RAD+ar’s Aruma restaurant and bar stands as a testament to the studio’s creative vision and architectural prowess. The project not only redefines the dining experience in Jakarta but also sets a new standard for integrating nature and contemporary design in urban settings.
