In the heart of Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, a young couple embarked on an ambitious project, transforming 9.5 acres of raw land into a modern farmhouse that perfectly embodies urban countryside living. Designed to accommodate their growing family of five, they collaborated with esteemed interior designer Suzanne Kasler. Together, they crafted a residence over 15,000 square feet that exudes casual elegance and warmth, harmoniously blending with its surroundings. Every detail of this home was meticulously planned to develop alongside the family’s evolving needs.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Interior Designer: Suzanne Kasler
Location: Buckhead, Atlanta
Project Type: Modern Farmhouse
Property Size: 15,000 square feet
Land Size: 9.5 acres
Key Feature: Seamless indoor-outdoor living

Kasler embraced a vision of seamless integration between indoor and outdoor spaces, crafting each room on the ground floor to either flow outdoors or converge into another area. A striking example of this design ethos is the living room, where bifold glass doors open onto a pool area overlooking the Chattahoochee River. This setup evokes a California-style ambiance that Kasler likens to Napa Valley homes. The placement of the primary and children’s bedrooms on the same floor encourages close family connections, fostering a sense of unity.

The thoughtfully selected furnishings and art pieces play a crucial role in the home’s aesthetic, embodying a timeless, understated elegance. A muted color palette ensures that the striking natural landscape remains the focal point. Interiors feature plush white sofas, soft rugs, and a mix of tan and pale blue elements that harmonize with the home’s textural elements like wood ceilings and plaster walls. Subtle pops of blue, inspired by the river views, recur throughout the decor, most notably in the study’s high-gloss sapphire ceiling and the starry print wallpaper of the attic playroom.

Kasler’s design incorporates patterned fabrics to add depth and interest within various spaces. In the open-concept kitchen, striped stools inject a touch of visual intrigue, while an upholstered office wall also serves as a practical bulletin board. These thoughtful design choices extend into the formal dining room, where blush floral wallcovering creates a garden-like atmosphere. Each element was chosen to enhance the home’s warmth and sophistication without overwhelming the senses, a balance that appeals to the couple’s well-traveled, young clientele.

Entertainment spaces were also a significant consideration for the homeowners. They invested in dynamic areas such as a media room, a bar, and an indoor basketball court on the lower floor to ensure guests of all ages could enjoy various activities. A dedicated crafts room upstairs further supports the home’s family-friendly credentials. Kasler emphasizes the home’s beauty and functionality, noting how its design accommodates a casual lifestyle where children’s items can be part of its lived-in charm.

Throughout her design, Kasler focused on using texture and neutrals to keep the aesthetic refined yet welcoming. The living room features furniture from renowned designers, complemented by custom drapery and art. The study stands apart with a deep blue ceiling, creating a distinct, intimate atmosphere. In the kitchen, a custom ladder offers function amidst lofty design elements, and the bar reflects the clients’ collegiate spirit with its orange accents. This attention to detail is consistent across the home, illustrating how thoughtful design can create spaces that are both beautiful and practical for a bustling family life.
