Jeremiah Brent’s latest project, Homewood in Brentwood, California, is a masterclass in creating a vibrant, family-centric space that balances grandeur with comfort. The home, designed for a lively family of six, showcases Brent’s ability to merge functional design with an inviting atmosphere.
Brent’s approach to this project was driven by the client’s desire for a space that could comfortably host large gatherings while still feeling intimate for everyday family life. “I’m always striving for contrast in my projects,” Brent explains. “This home needed to be ready for 40-person dinner parties, yet also be a place where the family can unwind together on a quiet Sunday.”
The home’s design revolves around creating an open, light-filled environment that promotes connection and flow. Expansive steel-framed windows are a key feature, allowing natural light to flood the interior and enhance the sense of space. Wide arched openings between communal areas further enhance the home’s flow, making it ideal for both lively entertaining and relaxed family moments.
Incorporating natural materials was crucial to Brent’s vision. Salvaged stones, woods, and cobblestones lend an air of timelessness to the interiors. “Even though the house is brand new, we wanted it to feel like it had a history,” says Brent. To achieve this, the exterior bricks were meticulously treated to create the appearance of centuries-old weathering. Custom elements, like the elegant bronze handles on the bar’s cabinetry, add a touch of refined detail to the space.
The home’s interior is a study in contrasts, a hallmark of Brent’s design philosophy. Soft and hard finishes coexist harmoniously: boucle chairs and hand-knotted wool rugs are paired with sleek glass pendant lights and sturdy stone tables. This blend of textures and materials creates a rich, layered aesthetic that feels both sophisticated and inviting.
Brent’s design not only caters to the family’s needs for space and functionality but also infuses the home with warmth and character. “It’s incredibly gratifying to walk into a home with so much square footage and still have it feel warm and relaxing,” Brent reflects. The result is a home that beautifully supports the family’s active lifestyle while providing a cozy retreat for quieter moments.
Trevor Tondro captures the essence of Brent’s design, showcasing the home’s inviting ambiance and thoughtful details. His images reveal the harmony between the spacious layout and intimate elements that make Homewood a true family sanctuary.
This project exemplifies how thoughtful design can transform a house into a home that not only accommodates but enhances the way its occupants live. For a space to truly feel like home, it must be both functional and emotionally resonant, and Homewood stands as a testament to Jeremiah Brent’s expertise in achieving this delicate balance.
