In an era where opulence often translates to size and extravagance, there exists a realm where true luxury is found in understated elegance and thoughtful design. Aria, a contemporary Art Deco residence crafted by Mumbai’s Studio Nishita Kamdar, epitomizes such refinement. Nestled close to downtown’s hustle and bustle, Aria stands as a sanctuary reflecting intelligent use of space, offering high-impact interiors imbued with tranquility and sophistication, allowing for a pace of life marked by reflection and grace.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Architect: Studio Nishita Kamdar
Location: Mumbai, India
Design Style: Contemporary Art Deco
Principal Designer: Nishita Kamdar
Key Features: Indian craftsmanship and bespoke art pieces
Square Footage: 2,800 square feet

As you approach Aria, the journey begins with a masterfully carved wooden door, hinting at the textures and artistry within. The blend of smart design and artistic flair is immediately evident from the foyer, which features a captivating terracotta-red sculpture seemingly flowing into the floor. This initial encounter sets the tone for the residence, where the synergy of form and function meets vibrant creativity, providing a sensory experience that is both invigorating and calming.

The 2,800-square-foot apartment is ingeniously laid out to maximize both shared and private spaces. The central living area seamlessly merges with the dining room, where an African Marble dining table commands attention under the ethereal glow of David Groppi’s lighting fixture. The open layout extends into a cozy yet sophisticated sitting area that invites intimate conversations. This social space is rich with artworks by eminent Indian artists such as Datta Bansode and Subodh Gupta, establishing a dialogue between art and architecture.

Beyond the social areas, Aria’s design continues to captivate with spaces dedicated to peaceful solitude and personal reflection. The media lounge, concealed behind a fluted black wall and golden archways, serves as a haven for both relaxation and artistic admiration. The pièce de résistance here is a stunning totem light installation by Klove Studio, complemented by a red rug and bold artworks from MF Hussain and Sunil Das. Each element in this room is curated to inspire introspection and delight the senses.

Aria’s private quarters are equally enchanting. The passageways leading to these spaces are adorned with bespoke art pieces, including a commissioned depiction of a deconstructed Buddhist wheel, transforming these transitional areas into immersive experiences. Each bedroom reflects the unique personality of its inhabitant, serving both as a retreat and an expression of individuality. The consistent use of materials such as wood floors and plaster walls throughout the home ensures a cohesive aesthetic that ties the various spaces together seamlessly.

Ultimately, Aria is a testament to the marriage of design and meaning. Principal designer Nishita Kamdar poses the question: What is true luxury? The answer lies in the understated opulence and appreciation of nuanced details within Aria—from the tactile pleasure of its materials to the emotional response elicited by its art. This home, realized entirely with Indian craftsmanship, is a declaration of local talent and creativity, underscoring the idea that luxury lies not in abundance but in the enrichment of life’s subtle beauties. To explore more of this philosophy, one needs only to step within the world Studio Nishita Kamdar has lovingly crafted.
