The West Coast flagship of AKILA Eyewear, designed by the innovative Los Angeles-based practice 22RE, has opened its doors in the vibrant Silver Lake neighborhood. PROJECT OVERVIEW
Location: Silver Lake, Los Angeles, California
Architecture & Interior Design: 22RE

Housed within a recently renovated art deco complex, the flagship store is located in a repurposed auto body shop dating back to the 1930s. This intriguing historical backdrop aligns perfectly with both 22RE’s and AKILA’s commitment to creating timeless designs that resonate with contemporary sensibilities. The store’s design captures a unique narrative that transforms the space into an inviting haven for eyewear enthusiasts.
Inspired by traditional Japanese ryokans—inns known for their serene atmospheres and meticulous attention to detail—Dean Levin, Founding Principal of 22RE, sought to evoke a sense of calm and warmth within the store. The design integrates translucent materials and subtle grids, alongside a gracefully curved soffit that echoes the shoji sliding doors found in these inns. This careful selection of elements not only creates an aesthetic appeal but also serves to foster a serene shopping experience, allowing visitors to feel as if they are stepping into a tranquil retreat.
A distinctive feature of the flagship is its thoughtfully designed ceiling. While retaining the original vaulted roof, 22RE introduced a large cross truss that brings the lighting lower, creating a more intimate atmosphere while showcasing the beauty of the exposed ceiling. This decision enhances the industrial essence of the original auto body shop, ensuring that the store’s heritage remains a focal point. The juxtaposition of the raw industrial elements with the refined design touches speaks volumes about the brand’s philosophy.
The merchandise display units, custom-built with glass blocks and pendants, are strategically flanked along the walls, further emphasizing AKILA’s commitment to presenting its products in an engaging manner. These display units not only serve a functional purpose but also contribute to the overall aesthetic, allowing each piece of eyewear to be showcased as a work of art.
The design of the AKILA West Coast flagship is a thoughtful homage to its New York counterpart, with the soffit and skylights serving as a red thread that connects the two locations. This nod to the brand’s roots enriches the shopping experience, providing customers with a sense of continuity as they explore the carefully curated collection of eyewear.
As customers step into the AKILA flagship, they are greeted by a harmonious environment where traditional craftsmanship meets modern precision. The strategic use of natural materials further enhances this ethos, inviting patrons to appreciate the tactile qualities of the space. The overall atmosphere is one that encourages exploration and interaction, making it more than just a retail store—it’s an experience.
In a world where design often favors the fleeting and superficial, AKILA’s approach reminds us of the beauty in the enduring. By intertwining elements of tradition with a contemporary flair, the West Coast flagship stands as a testament to the brand’s vision and commitment to quality.
In conclusion, the AKILA West Coast flagship, designed by 22RE, is more than just a store; it’s a celebration of design philosophy that honors the past while embracing the future. With its unique blend of natural materials, modern precision, and homage to Japanese craftsmanship, the space serves as a refreshing addition to Los Angeles’s vibrant retail landscape.
