Susan Aqeel’s life is an inspiring tapestry interwoven with her love for art, which has evolved profoundly since her move to New York’s Soho in 1968. Here, Susan mingled with renowned artists, fostering a lifelong appreciation of art, despite early challenges in formal painting classes. Her son, Omar, driven by his mother’s passion, has established himself as an interior designer. Now, at a pivotal moment in her life, Susan has entrusted Omar with the design of her pied-à-terre in New York, where her story of art and life continues to unfold.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Interior Designer: Omar
Location: West Chelsea, New York
Architectural Style: Anglo-Italianate
Renovation Focus: Maximizing space and maintaining historical character
Art Reference: Art Deco and Donald Judd influences

Susan’s new apartment sits in the historic West Chelsea district, an area that resonates with her rich artistic encounters and friendships. The property, characterized by its Anglo-Italianate style with ornate stone fireplaces and grand French doors, offers a classical backdrop to the vibrant art scenes nearby. Omar, invigorated by his mother’s vision, embraces the challenge of crafting a space that feels both serene and ready to host lively gatherings, a true reflection of Susan’s bold and elegant spirit.

The primary transformation of the apartment centered around maximizing space while maintaining its historical character. Omar discovered an opportunity to enhance the apartment’s sense of space by raising the ceilings in the kitchen and hallways, a move that brought natural light flooding in. These architectural adjustments, alongside the refinishing of the floors to a lighter hue, were vital in preventing the space from feeling constrained. In doing so, Omar created a seamless blend of historical charm and contemporary openness.

In executing the design, Omar was keen on ensuring the apartment reflected Susan’s eclectic taste and her love for Art Deco. The living room, aptly termed “the salon,” strikes a balance between traditional architectural elements and modern furnishings. A creamy white backdrop sets the stage for striking artistic pieces—red Don Chadwick club chairs and a painting by Evan Paul English—providing a dynamic contrast to the delicate features of the townhouse. This setting not only serves as a personal gallery for Susan’s cherished artworks but also as a testament to her influential presence in the art community.

Every design project includes an element of challenge, and for Susan, this was the kitchen. Initially reluctant to the idea of a stainless steel kitchen, Susan eventually conceded to Omar’s vision. Eschewing conventional designs, Omar opted for brushed stainless steel cabinets to line one side of the space, complemented by a minimalistic approach elsewhere. This daring choice echoes the minimalist forms of Donald Judd, capturing a blend of raw materiality and minimalist beauty, with a unique lime wash instead of a traditional backsplash, creating a refined yet functional work of art.

Throughout the apartment, Susan’s curated art collection breathes life into the space. Each piece tells a personal story, connecting Susan to a network of living artists who are close friends and loved ones. This intermingling of art and familiarity imparts a unique vitality to the apartment, making it more than just a living space. It becomes a sanctuary where art and personal history converge, offering Susan a haven to reconnect with her past while celebrating her enduring love for art and her integral role within her creative community.
