In 2016, the serene landscape of Fatima welcomed a new chapter in its spiritual journey with the unveiling of the Outdoor Altar in the Prayer Area. Designed by the esteemed Paula Santos Arquitectura, this architectural marvel was conceived to honor the centenary of the Apparitions of Fatima and the historic visit of Pope Francis on May 13, 2017.

The new Outdoor Altar is more than a mere addition; it is a profound symbol of faith and dedication. The project encompasses a broad range of facilities to enhance the experience of pilgrims and visitors alike. At its core, the altar features a Sacristy, a Chapel of the Sacred Reserve, and various support areas designed specifically for the clergy. These spaces are meticulously crafted to ensure functionality while maintaining a reverent atmosphere.

One of the most significant advancements in this project is the integration of accessibility features. The design not only improves the colonnades surrounding the altar but also incorporates a redesigned staircase that facilitates easy access to all religious structures, including the historic Basilica. This thoughtful addition ensures that every visitor, regardless of mobility, can participate fully in the spiritual activities offered.

The design of the altar itself is a testament to innovation and elegance. The team collaborated with INEGI to develop a unique fiberglass cover, which measures an impressive 600 square meters. This cover, supported solely by a block of white concrete, is both functional and visually striking. Its suspended design creates an ethereal quality, enhancing the sacred ambiance of the prayer area.

The architectural elements of the altar are further enriched by the contributions of prominent artists. Filip Moroder’s depiction of Christ provides a profound spiritual focal point, while João Mendes Ribeiro’s design of the liturgical spaces integrates seamlessly with the overall aesthetic. Additionally, Fernanda Fragateiro’s sculpture, Matéria Espiritual, adds a contemplative dimension to the altar, inviting reflection and reverence.

The Outdoor Altar’s design is not merely an architectural feat but a grand scenographic intervention in a place of profound significance. Paula Santos Arquitectura aimed to create a space that is both sublime and harmonious within the expansive praying square. The altar’s presence enhances the spiritual experience of the site, offering a majestic backdrop for the countless ceremonies and gatherings held there.

This project stands as a testament to the intersection of sacred space and modern design. The integration of advanced materials and thoughtful accessibility features exemplifies a deep respect for both the spiritual heritage and the evolving needs of its visitors. As the Outdoor Altar continues to serve as a beacon of faith and reflection, it embodies the enduring spirit of Fatima and the profound impact of architectural innovation in sacred contexts.
